It’s not by accident you’re staying near the Intracoastal, and you brought your gear. Fishing the Intracoastal and ocean nearby is an adventure. Here are a few fun facts about the Intracoastal Waterway to toss at your fishing buddies.
The part through the Lowcountry is the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. It stretches from Norfolk, Va., to Key West, Fla. That’s about 1,100 miles.
The Intracoastal Waterway goes north to Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., down through Key West. It extends to Brownsville, Texas, by the Gulf of Mexico. That’s 3,000 miles. It goes through canals, bays, natural inlets, saltwater rivers, and sounds, and not the ocean.
That’s a desirable route, but an ocean voyage would be time-consuming and treacherous. The Intracoastal gives mariners a path to navigate without the perils of the open sea.
