Shopping and Dining at The Hammock's Village
The Hammock marquis says it all: 23 unique shops await you in a single destination that began as a hammock shop in 1938. But its roots run deeper, to the late 19th century, when a riverboat captain sought a cooler sleeping arrangement aboard his stuffy rice boat. This necessity led to the invention of a loosely woven sling, the precursor to what we recognize today as a ‘modern’ hammock. A little over a century later, the Lachicotte family of Pawleys Island, SC earned their livelihood making hammocks and grew their business into a storefront and commercial hub that would later serve as the basis for The Hammock Shops Village.
Today, this thriving complex features shops that purvey diverse offerings running the gamut from specialty confections, jewelry, and souvenirs, to upscale clothing, shoes, and handbags. The Hammock Shop still stands among them, where you can purchase the Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock and take home a little South Carolina history as a memento of your vacation. (And while you’re there, say hello to Marvin Grant, the “Hammock Man” who demonstrates the weaving method behind this favorite American sling chair.)

The Farmers Market happens twice monthly from May through August, and once a month in April and September through November.
